North Korea will be the subject of an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council after a successful launch of an ICBM on Tuesday. North Korea claims it could reach anywhere in the world.   Congressman Don Bacon revealed more information about North Korea’s capabilities.  He says they have at least ten nuclear weapons and that is at the unclassified level and they are working to make the warheads smaller to put them on these missiles that can now hit Alaska and Hawaii.  He says hitting the continental United States is just a matter of time.

Congressman Bacon says the U.S. reaction to North Korea will have to be well thought through. He says, “There are very stark options on how to go about this.  I looked at a study this last month and if we had a war in the Korean Peninsula it is estimated that two-million would be killed in 30 days because Seoul is so close to the border.  It is a challenging problem but not acceptable that Kim Jong-un has nuclear weapons that can hit the United States.”

Congressman Bacon says a lot will depend on what China does as they would almost prefer a North Korea situation than a total democratic Korea and they are not motivated into doing a lot. He says that is where the U.S. may have to force their hand.  One option would be to state the U.S. will not do business with any financial institution or company that does business with North Korea.  He says that will have an impact.

Congressman Bacon says another move would be to offer more military capability to Japan and South Korea. He says China does not want to see either country gain in military capabilities so putting missiles there may help influence China to do more.
