Chinese Hackers Gain Access to Emails of U.S. Representative Don Bacon

The personal and political emails of Representative Don Bacon, a moderate Republican from Nebraska, were compromised by suspected Chinese hackers who exploited a Microsoft error. The breach occurred between mid-May and mid-June, coinciding with other reported breaches. Rep. Bacon has been informed by the FBI that his emails were hacked and has vowed to ensure that Taiwan receives the U.S. weaponry it has ordered. He suspects that the hackers may attempt to discredit or undermine him politically, but he asserts that there is nothing embarrassing in his emails.

It was previously reported that victims of this hacking campaign included Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, State Department employees, a human rights advocate, and think tanks. Another victim, a congressional staffer, has also been targeted. Rep. Bacon’s recent notification suggests that additional victims are still being discovered.
